Former Vikings Defensive Back Ronyell Whitaker Dies at 46

Feb. 22, 2026 — Norfolk, Va. Ronyell Whitaker, a former NFL defensive back who played for the Minnesota Vikings, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Detroit Lions, died Sunday at the age of 46, his family confirmed through a statement issued by the Vikings. No cause of death has been publicly disclosed by the family, team or authorities.

Whitaker, a standout at Lake Taylor High School in Norfolk and Virginia Tech, signed as an undrafted free agent with the Buccaneers in 2003. He appeared in four games as a rookie before joining the Vikings, where he played 27 games over two seasons (2006-2007), recording 31 tackles, one pass defended and one fumble recovery, according to Fox News. He also spent time with the Lions in the 2008 offseason and played in the Canadian Football League with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers before retiring in 2010.

Born on March 19, 1979, Ronyell lived a life marked by passion, perseverance and purpose… While many knew him for his athletic accomplishments, those closest to him knew him best for his generous heart, unwavering loyalty and deep love for his family… During this incredibly difficult time, we ask for prayers, love and privacy as our family grieves this tremendous loss and celebrates the life of a man who meant so much to so many.

Funeral arrangements were to be announced later.

Post-Football Career

After retiring, Whitaker served as defensive backs coach at Chanhassen High School in Minnesota from 2014 to 2018. He was also CEO and owner of Whitaker Group, LLC, a company specializing in relocation transactions and short sales since 2011.

Context with Rondale Moore’s Death

Whitaker’s passing came one day after the death of current Vikings wide receiver Rondale Moore on Feb. 21, 2026, from a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound, as reported by People magazine. The two events appear unrelated, with a Vikings representative noting the team was still processing Moore’s death at the time.

Virginia Tech football issued a statement: “We are saddened to learn of the passing of former Hokie Ronyell Whitaker. Our thoughts are with his loved ones during this time.”
